extra credit

1.    Which assignment did you ENJOY working on the best? Why?
I enjoyed working on creating our own art exhibition project because it was fun to be able to create our own theme and find works that related to it we could do whatever we wanted.
2. Which assignment did you ENJOY working on the least? Why?
I did not enjoy having to do all of those readings, but it helped me learn more.
3. How did you like using BLACKBOARD?
I liked it, it was easy to navigate.
4. What is your opinion of the Discussion Groups in this course?
I thought they were helpful when I needed help, also a good way to keep the class connected.
5. Did you participate in any of the extra credit projects in previous modules? If so, what was your opinion of them? (mandala, elgin marbles, culture, art critics)
No I have not.
6. If you had the opportunity to change this course:
What would you keep?-  discussion groups
What would you remove?- less gallery visits and less readings
What would you add? I don’t really know what I would add
7. Would you recommend this course to your peers?
Yes I would if they really wanted to learn about art.
8. Please list any other comments you would like to share.

I liked this class and thought this class was interesting but it was harder for me to juggle with other classes because the amount of homework and projects assigned.

Module 16 reflection on course

1.    What were you expectations for this course and where they met?
My expectations for this course was to learn something interesting about art that I didn’t know before taking this course, and yes they were most definitely met taking this course.
2.    Now that you've been through this course, What is art? How would you define it now compared to your intial posting?
I would now define art as self explanatory because it has so many different meanings and ways to create something new. It comes in many different forms, and can be expressed from anything.
3.    Who was your favorite artist in your original posting and who is your favorite visual artist now? If there is a difference, why do you think so? If you have the same favorite artist, why do you think so?
I would say my favorite visual artist after completing this course would be Pablo Picasso because I feel that a lot of his art tells a story, and I enjoy looking at his work.
4.    Now that you've completed this course, how do you feel about taking an online course? Is your answer the same as it was in your first posting? How is it the same or different?

I feel much more comfortable taking an online course after taking this course. In the beginning of the semester I was worried about how the entire class worked and how I would submit work also the communication between students and professor. I just thought it was going to be very difficult but after taking this online course for the first time, I am much more comfortable and will be taking more in the future.

Module 12 video discussion

1.      Explain why you selected each of the TWO videos you choose from the selection listed above.
I chose the two videos I watched because I thought they would be interesting to learn about.
2.      For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.
Abstract Expressionism and Pop: Art of the ’50s and ’60s: Abstract Expressionism was born from a joining of attitudes in American art and European avant-garde art. Abstract art is compared to figurative art. Klines uses shapes that show emotions. Uses of action painting reveals a process of constant discovery and brings us into a place of color and form. John's paintings undermine our assumptions and make us think. He seeks to make his common subjects visually seductive. Warhol and Rauschenber become art icons of the 60s by creating the path for pop artists in the use of everyday objects.
Isamu Noguchi: The Sculpture of Spaces: Noguchi creates sculpture gardens to "humanize space and sculpture." Noguchi's childhood holds many clues to his interest in sculpture. Young Noguchi is plagued by poverty. To make a living, he sculpts heads, including the head of Martha Graham. In 1980, Isamu Noguchi is commissioned to redesign Miami's Bayfront Park. A retrospective of his sculptures reveals his artistic versatility and vision. He experiments with different media such as water to create a new manifestation of an approach to sculpture. He explains the relationship between a human and the sculpture he or she observes.
3.      How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?
The videos relate to the reading in the text because the reading and video refer to Abstract expressionists, and the creative powers of the unconscious and its technique of automatism as a way to tap into the many sources of Surrealism. Also the videos relate to how western ideas about art were taken up and adapted by many cultures like Japan.
4. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?

The videos were helpful because it helped add depth to my understanding of the artists and how the used their art to send messages, also how ideas about art were adapted into different cultures.

Module 11 video discussion

1. Explain why you selected each of the TWO videos you choose from the selection listed above:
I selected the two videos because they interested me more than the others, and wanted to know more about them.
2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned:
Expressionism:  Edward Munch created an image that radically broke the norms of content and style. It showed the relationship problem between man and woman and sexuality. The piece is called “Ashes”. His uncompromising portrayal of emotion caused deep offense to the bourgeois mentality. Marc's "Rain" shows debt to cubism and Cézanne. The cubist influence is even stronger in "The Tiger". The year after "The Tiger", the forest became a place of menace in "The Fate of Animals", it was said to be a premonition of war. In one of his last paintings, he tried to predict the apocalypse to come.  Ernst Ludwig Kirchner painted a series of works featuring "tarts" on the streets of a busy city. They appear to be hurried and seem to turn the viewer into a voyeur. In the Museum Ludwig there is a sketch of "Five Women in the Street". A quote from Kirchner expresses his opinion that when viewing a modern metropolis at night, any attempt to objectively construct a picture is useless. Anselm Kiefer was born at the end of World War II. His work alludes darkly to the war. "Operation Sea Lion" depicts a famous naval campaign taking place in a bath tub.
Dada and Surrealism:  Kurt Schwitters realizes the unlimited possibilities of collage. Schwitters includes many objects in his art. The artist includes rural objects in his art. Light reflects off the objects in Schwitters’ art. Hannah Höch, a Dadaist, uses art to attack the society she detests. Her photomontage, “Cut With the Kitchen Knife” (1919), contains chaotic figures. It makes a monumental political statement, it attacks the political figures of the Weimar regime. George Grosz paints "Pillars of Society," an attack on his enemies. He paints a wide social range of Berlin's subjects. Dali is a surrealist painter, He probes the darkest regions of the human subconscious. His imagination creates a world where nothing makes sense. He includes arid, barren landscapes in his work. In "La Fortune," single components of the painting are true to life. But, other elements are separate from reality. Familiar objects appear to be in an unfamiliar arrangement.

3. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?
The videos relate to the reading in the text because they both show how the time period the artist lived in, their surroundings, and the events that were taking place at the time effected their art, and the message they tried to convey through the piece.

4. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?

My opinion of the films would be that they were helpful in helping me learn something new about artists that I didn’t really know about. It added depth to my understanding because it talked about some of the “isms” for example an outgrowth of Fauvism. Also, how their everyday lives and the places where they lived significantly impacted their work.

Module 10 Mask Making

Mask Making:

Sketch

Painted cut out

3D painted mask front view

3D painted mask side view

3D painted mask side view

4. Explain how you used the Elements and Principles in your finished mask.
I used the principle of balance in my mask because I tried to make it look symmetrical on both sides. I also tried using form because I wanted spots on the mask to rise, like the tounge and the nose and eyes. I also used the element of color in my mask and I used solid colors because if I didn't want the mask to look to wild in appearance.
5. Share your opinion of your finished mask and what you thought about creating the mask.
My opinion of my finished mask would be that I think it looks cool and different, I like how i made certain features on the face pop out and I like the colors I incorporated into the mask. My thoughts on this assignment would be that it was different, but i really enjoyed being able to create this piece, I have never done it before and thought it was fun.

Module 10 video discussion

1.      Explain why you selected each of the TWO videos you choose from the selection listed above.
I picked these videos because they seemed interesting to learn more about.

2.      For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.
African Art:   Art is a part of their daily life, a strong aesthetic sense is expressed in dress, homes, everyday utensils, hair styles, forms of ornamentation, rituals and performances. Egyptian and Saharan art and architecture show influences of agriculture. Primitive Art influenced Picasso and modernist painters. There is a lot of diversity in African art. They repeat traditional designs, adding their own refinements.
Buddhism:    Buddhism split into two groups, "hinayana" and "mahanyana." Sanchi is a center of Buddhist art and architecture.  Buddha symbolism is represented only by the Bodhi Tree. There is a walkway around the Great Stupa where every step is a discovery of Buddhist art and architecture. Buddhism is a religion that began by repudiating rituals, questions, prayer, and the idea of a personal god, ends up embracing all of these. In India, Buddhism and Hinduism  share commonalities.

3.      How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?
The videos relate to the reading in the text because the reading and the videos talk about African and Buddhist religion (and other religions) and how it connects/ impacts their architecture and art, also their everyday lives.

4.       What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?

My opinion of the films would be that they were helpful in helping me understand some more about the religion, and how their religion impacts their art, architecture, and their everyday lives, and the meaning behind it.

Module 9 Art Making/Material Exploration: Exploring Line

1. What was it like using your hand as subject matter for a drawing?

It was interesting but kind of difficult to draw. The shadows of my fingers/hand were harder to get down on the paper but I attempted to do it.

2. What media did you select - pencil or charcoal? Why?

Pencil, because it was all I had to use, and I could erase if necessary.

3. How did it feel to create a drawing with your non-dominant hand?

It felt different, weird and uncomfortable creating a drawing with my non dominant hand.

4. Compare and contrast your final drawings. Do you think they are successful studies?

Yes, the drawing with my dominant hand was easier and looked better than the drawing with my non dominant hand.

5. Would you consider using your non-dominant hand to create artwork in the future?

Yes I would consider using my non dominant hand to create another piece of artwork in the future because I would like to get better at drawing or even writing with my non dominant hand.

Module 9 Video discussion questions

Module 9
Video discussion questions

1.    Explain why you selected each of the TWO videos you choose from the selection listed above.
- I selected the videos because I was interested in learning something new about the artists.
2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.
The Drawings of Michelangelo: The techniques Michelangelo used. Michelangelo had very good knowledge of the human body, which helped his drawings look even better. Michelangelo’s drawings reveals emphasis on the solar plexus of human figures. We see through the other drawings how he prepared the figures for the ceiling in the Sistine Chapel. He was called by the Medici pope to design the Medici family church of San Lorenzo, it became a funerary chapel and family tomb. Michelangelo had conflicting forces of the male form and his intensely felt Christian faith, which were what inspired him in his art. He explores his conflicting feelings of hope and dread in his crucifixion drawings.
Leonardo da Vinci: The Mind of the Renaissance: Shows Leonardo’s life and work from his birth in Tuscany to his last years in Cloux. He was an expert painter, sculptor, architect, engineer, etc. In his younger years he amazes his family and friends by his desire for understanding, and he only gets better over time. He is a master of perspective and proportion of man and animals, also becomes a good architect, and draws from life. He studies the machines of his day in order to improve them and to invent even more complex ones. He organizes entertainments and shows at the court of Milan and experiments with mechanical inventions and theatrical machinery. As an engineer he designs an excavator large enough to build canals.
3.    How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?
The videos relate to the reading in the text because they both talk about how the role of the human body was held at such a high position during this time. Also about the artists and the techniques they used.
4.    What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?
My opinion of the films would be that they helped me get a better understand of the artists and the techniques they used.

Module 8 video and reading question/answers

1.    Explain why you selected the video you choose from the selection listed above.
I selected the video that I chose because I had to choose another video to watch and the one I chose seemed interesting to listen to.

2.    For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.
More Human Than Human: How the struggles of early artists led to the triumphs of the world’s great civilizations. Some of the extraordinary ceremonies of the world’s oldest artistic cultures, how they unlocked the deepest secrets of ancient art. Talked about how the human mind drove us to create these images.
The Measure of All Things: Greek Art and the Human Figure: Artists portrayed humans in a realistic way and were obsessed with perfection of the body, made people want to go to the gym. Cycladic sculptures of the fifth century inspire artists today. Sculpture was substantial in sixth century Greece, it gave a new sense of humanism with a realistic and idealistic representation of the human body. Talked about balance and movement in the fifth century statue of Nike and the fourth century state of Hermes.

3.    How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?
The videos relate to the readings in the text because in the reading and videos they touch upon how they exaggerate the body how they were “obsessed” with the human body focusing on humanism and idealism. Videos and readings both talk about culture throughout. Also, talks about the principles of balance and movement, and the materials that were used to create this artwork.

4. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?
I thought the films were helpful. It helps add depth to the understanding of the readings and art concepts because after reading, it was helpful being able to hear about the history and learn some more facts from the videos that wasn’t in the reading.

MODULE 7 VIDEOS AND READING QUESTIONS

 1.      For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.

Architecture: The Science of Design: Different techniques used to support high buildings (driving steel, wood or concrete piles deep into the ground until they are strong enough to support the building, or if that does not work another technique would be the building is set on an immense slab of reinforced concrete that extends out beyond the perimeter of the building). The higher the building means the stronger/ more violent wind, so they must keep this in mind when constructing the building, if the building has a weak structure the sway (from wind) can damage the structure, elevators, and even cause motion sickness. Talked about the different materials that were used in construction of buildings(concrete, steel, wood, stone, etc.).
Last Call for Planet Earth: Sustainable Development and Architecture: Architecture is global,  people aimlessly use resources, it talks about how it isn’t hard to use less energy. Talks about architectural design (takes into account geography, climate, local resources, and renewable materials like wood) on how to manage and conserve energy(heating, cooling, solar energy).  The video talks about how simple apartment designs in china have a positive impact on ecology and economy. The film talks about buildings that are energy efficient, and how the elements are important to sustainable architecture for now and the future.

2.      How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?
The videos relate to the reading because they talk about techniques used to support and construct buildings (Steel frame construction) Also it talks about how the computers are linked up with the heart of the house, building, etc. , it helps assist the users needs. Video talks about concrete and other materials like wood, stone and steel that were used in architecture. Video talks about energy conservation with architectural design.

3.      What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of Architecture?                                                                                                                                                           I thought both of the videos that I watched were helpful. The video helps add depth to my understanding of Architecture because when I see how it is done and when it is explained to me instead of only reading it helps me understand it more. The videos brought up important concepts that were also brought up in the reading, so being able to hear about it and read it, helped back up my understanding of architecture and I learned some new things from both the reading and videos.

       4. Why did you choose the films that you watched?

I chose the films because when I looked at the titles of the videos I chose the two that sounded the most interesting to me.

peer review mod 6

2.    When looking at Project #1: (Elements and Principles), did you agree with the element or principle the artist listed with the images? Did you see other elements and principles in the images?
After looking at project #1 I thought that all the elements were represented nice and clearly. I enjoyed looking at other students pictures and seeing the element/principle being used in different pictures.
3.    When looking at Project #2: Where there any images in the Peer Blogs the same as your own? If yes, what were they? Where the reasons the image was selected the same or different as your own?
After viewing a couple blogs I did see all of the elements of art being applied. The blogs I looked at did not have the same pictures as me.  In some pictures I saw depth and color that set the mood of the picture. Different pictures that I looked at used multiple elements and I thought it was interesting.

4.    Where there any images that your Peers selected that pique your interest now? If yes, what are they and what is your connection with them? What would you want to know about them?
“Danseuse au café, Dance in a café” was a picture that spoke to me because it has so much going on that it caught my attention when I looked at it, I enjoy the color that it has and each line seems to catch my eye. I would like to learn more about this piece.
5.    What do you think about  the process of reading your peers reflection? Do you find this to be a valuable in your learning?
I enjoyed being able to see what my peers  thought about the paintings that they saw and see if they thought the same thing about a painting that I saw (if we saw the same one). It helped with learning because some of the reviews that I read about the paintings they saw made me try to look at the painting the way they did, it helped open my mind up more to the painting to see something I didn’t see before.
6.    Check your Blog and read comments posted by your Peers. Do you find their comments helpful?

No I haven’t gotten any comments on my blog post, if they were to comment on it I would like to know what they thought.

MODULE 6 Video and reading questions

Anthony Sarcinellli

1.      For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.
Through the eyes of the sculptor: The multiple steps a sculptor must take before creating a new work. How the restoration sculptors try to put themselves in the shoes of the artist that originally created the sculpture. They have to get themselves in the same mood.  Checking if the stone is good to begin carving by sound, you will be able to hear if there are cracks while you are tapping it. Leaving bridges or reinforced uncarved marble piece wherever marble was hanging in the air so that the sculpture would not get damaged in shipping. Being able to draw and visualize the sculpture in your head before you begin, and you want it to be detailed but don’t want it to be to detailed so you can be open to new ideas. It is not just one person that does the entire sculpture, they work as a unit, each specialist will work on part of the sculpture, it goes through more than just one person to get it done.
Glass and Ceramics: The glass maker grabs a small lump of molten glass on the rod, then blows into the rod until it inflates and becomes a bubble, continuously turning the rod he shapes the matter with a metal iron or wooden slab or with his hands using a wet newspaper, the glass gradually hardens when in contact with the air, he can reheat it so he can continue modeling it to whatever shape he wants. Final firing it will give it its hardness and strength. Cementation allows the paint to adhere to the glass definitively yet remaining transparent. Ceramic material use began to grow, they are stronger than steel and can withstand very high temperatures. Ceramic was beginning to appear in daily lives, architecture, also it shows up in the hospital, household, and in cars, etc. The different types of glass have different levels of strength and resistance.

2.      How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?
The videos relate to the readings because Emmanuel Fillion refers to his model to carve his sculpture, when you work clay you add on , but when working with marble it’s from out to in, so you need a higher level of concentration because once you chisel it off you can’t put it back on.  He wants to leave some material behind and have the figure coming out of the marble block, it is not an “In the Round” sculpture.    When heated, glass becomes molten, and in that state it can be shaped by several different methods, this relates to the glass and Ceramic video.

3.      What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the topics: Sculpture, Installation, and Craft?
The videos add depth to the understanding of these topics because it actually shows and tells you how these things are created and it shows the actually process and application of it. It helps you understand it better when you see the process actually happening and what they have to do.  It gives you a better understanding being able to watch how it works after reading about it.  The films helped me understand the processes better because it goes more in depth on what the process actually is and how it’s done, so the videos helped me.

module 5 logo questions and pictures

Anthony Sarcinelli
(EXTENDED TIME)
1.      Discuss what you thought about creating your logo.
I thought it was fun creating my logo because I have never done something like this before where I had to create something that I felt represented me, I found it challenging during the brainstorming phase of creating my logo because I didn’t know what to even start with but after I started thinking of my personality and my interests and what I like it became much easier to get ideas flowing, and it made it easier to begin to sketch. Overall I thought it was fun to be able to create a logo that represented me.
2.      Describe the process: creative thinking skills and ideas you used in the logo creation.
The process of creating my logo was challenging at first, the brainstorming and sketching. It was hard for me to think of what to even start with, then I started thinking of my personality, hobbies, interests, just things I enjoyed doing and it became easier to sketch and come up with ideas. After I finished with my sketches I looked at them and chose which sketch I liked the most and expanded the idea and added color and whatever else I wanted to add to it because at that point I knew the theme of my design. So throughout the process of drawing my logo I would adjust/change the things that I wanted to while I was doing it.
3.      What was the most important discovery you made in the creation of your logo?
The most important discovery I made in creating my logo would be that during the brainstorming phase you really need to open your mind to all or any ideas that come to your head. The small little sketch that you made can become something completely new or have so much more detail and meaning behind it because you can elaborate from your ideas which leads to new ideas, that’s what I thought was an important discovery that I have made throughout this process.
4.      What is the most important information you learned from watching the videos, powerpoint, and reading material  for this project? What is your opinion of the videos?
The most important thing I learned from the sources would be that before starting anything you first have to find out the message you want to convey and what you want to say or show. Doing this first and having these things set, will help your piece grow and have ideas begin to form because you now have something to work with, a base.

Module 5 art gallery visit

Anthony Sarcinelli
MODULE 5 Art Gallery #1

Ask myself:
A)    Which art works make an impact or impression on me? Why?
LAVEUSE AU QUAI D'ANJOU (LAUNDRESS ON THE QUAI D’ANJOU) By Honore Daumier made an impression on me because it touched base with poverty, and the color that he used gave it a depressing mood.

THE YELLOW CHRIST by Paul Gauguin made an impression on me because it is showing such a significant event, symbolizing the death of Christ. The colors contrast the mood of what is going on. The painting uses a lot of warm colors/tones when really it should be cooler more depressing colors.

B)    Which artworks do I feel a connection with? Why?
I felt a connection with the painting “DIE WOLFE” by Franz Mark because it stood out to me  because of the warmer colors and just how the whole painting is designed, I think it looks cool because it looks like a lot is happening at once and the colors go good together.

I felt a connection with “ECHO, WOW AND FLUTTER” by Fred Tomaselli, when I first saw it I was attracted to the color and the pattern/design of it. I like the energy that it gives off when you look at it.

C)    Which art works would I like to know more about and why?

I would like to know more about “NOMAD” by James Rosenquist because I feel like there is a story behind the painting that I would like to know more about.

I would like to know more about “MUSIC AND LITERATURE” by William Harnett because it looks cool, I like the music sheet and books behind it, there is a lot to look at, and my eye is just attracted to this painting so it would be interesting to learn more about it.
